found: sweet card catalog

Posted in Uncategorized on March 2nd, 2009 by emily august – 3 Comments

Love this vintage/amazing card catalog my friend JP found and brought home to his apartment in Jersey City. I hope to see it in person soon. We are starting a drawing club, so if anyone is interested in joining us once a week–let me know! Also, dear Universe, please send me a card catalog for my future home.

PS: do you see how he has a statue of Ruby there on top? TRUE LOVE!

Feminine, fairy-tale inspired, fantastic illustrations via Katogi Mari’s web portfolio.

Ruby appears in the last one as Dinah the cat.

On a related note, we watched this adaptation of Peter and the Wolf via Netflix this week, and it was everything I hoped it would be. Highly recommended.

I heart my Gocco!

tree printing

Okay, so I know that I’ve mentioned already that I am going to be helping my sister by designing and printing her wedding invites. We met this weekend to go over some preliminary ideas, but the first step was for me to jump in and try printing on my new Gocco machine, which I purchased on ETSY a few months ago.

My first screen did not burn properly and I thought I was going to cry. A bad screen means that I’ve wasted bulbs, the screen, and test ink, which all means money down the drain. I got very cranky and started poking holes in the screen with a safety pin. Finally, I just gave up and burned a new screen.

The second screen turned out alright. About a quarter of the image was meant to have more solid areas and they burned very poorly, picking up the texture of the sticky pad on the machine below. What I ended up doing was covering that part of the screen and just printing the rest of my image: a set of tree branches. The inspiration was this drawing I did on my sisters’ closet doors about two years ago. Her wedding is going to be incorporating birds and bicycles, so I thought it was a good place to start.

tree printing

Honestly, I kind of loved it. There is something magical about printing something that comes out of your own head. I decided the image didn’t look half bad on the face of an envelope, and so I raided my stash of stationery to pick out different sizes and colors and experiment.

I mixed gold and black ink just to play around (why not?) and it was kind of fun. I’m happy with most of them, even if they aren’t as I intended. Even the smudgy ones are kind of neat.

Here are some envelopes drying in the rack:

I will get much better at this with practice, but overall I’m happy with my first attempt. Next to figure out exactly what she wants each piece to say (save the dates, invites, thank you cards, etc), and play with more colored inks.

I decided to give my digital art its own very simple home on the internet. Instead of posting big image files here, where the layout cuts off many of my images, I set up this new blog to be free of formatting and only feature the artwork as an image file to link into flickr. If you are interested, you can check out emilyaugust.blogspot.com, or subscribe to the RSS feed.

Both blogs are also syndicated on LiveJournal:

RadioLab at Angelika Theater this Thursday Night

After an invite to the movies from a friend today, I discovered something amazing going on this Thursday night at Angelika Theater! I don’t know if I will go, since I have already decided to attend an open house for a graduate school program that I’m interested in. I am torn between exploring something that will affect my future, and enjoying the creative process of something that influences my present mindset very heavily… then again, since only 203 tickets are available, I have a feeling that a casual drop-by after work on the day-of would not warrant me a ticket.

From the Angelika Theater Blog:

Radiolab, the syndicated, top-rated NPR program is premiering its 4th season at the Angelika New York on Thursday, Feb. 21 at 7pm. The free “listening premiere”, held in conjunction with WNYC public radio, is open to the first 203 lucky fans to arrive at the theater – attendees will be treated to some pretty cool guests, including one of The Onion’s hilarious editors, an underground musical act and the chance to meet the Radiolab hosts themselves!

Hosted by award winning, cult-journalist heroes Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich, Radiolab airs locally on WNYC and takes an accessible, documentary-style, intelligent (and kind of odd) approach to tackling existentialist-friendly topics and current events (past shows have featured such titles as Morality, Beyond Time, & Who Am I).

For more info, visit the Radiolab Website. And keep checking back at our blog for exclusive media from a some of the [wacky] participants….

Check out Radio Lab on wnyc.org.

And, by the way, the films we want to see are Persepolis, and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. Has anyone seen either of these yet? Also, Little Known Fact: This is the theater where Rory and I had our first date. We saw a very inappropriate film by Vincent Gallo, and sat nervously ignoring each other’s reactions to the graphic content. It was really romantic.

Drawn freehand-style with the pen in Adobe Illustrator. The knives are decorative brushes that just needed to be there, because it suits my mood today.

One reason I am so thankful that I took an Illustrator class at FIT is that I learned how to draw with the pen–which is a pain in the butt. Its nice to be able to control curves, though I am still getting the hang of it.
