queen of the double wide cat scratcher

Ruby is queen of all that surrounds. I'm sitting next to her, transcribing cassette tapes into digital format and there is a ton of snow outside. For anyone planning to go to the life drawing workshop at the Jersey City Museum, it has been canceled due to weather conditions. Now to figure out where and how to host audio other than on Myspace. To be continued.

Snow day has become snow weekend!

Adopt a WFMU DJ!

Posted in jersey city, music on February 26th, 2010 by emily – Be the first to comment

The annual WFMU pledge drive is ON, man. If you are a local Jersey City resident then you must already be listening. However, if you are a blog reader from way over yonder elsewhere, then you are going to want to start listening online. And when you do, you will see how wonderful free form radio really is. These guys host so much content streaming off their site, its unbelievable. Heroes, all. Ever since the fall of the old WHTG FM106.3, WFMU has been my only hope. And it has never disappointed.

As part of the pledge drive, you can adopt a WFMU DJ. However, via their flickr page I have found you this guy to adopt instead. He is a silent co-host and we are in love. So, do your part and click away! You'll get great swag and good karma in the process.

More information on adopting Bosco:

"Bosco" is the furry co-host of Meghan's Underwater Theme Park. He is a silent co-host, but he tries to help out as much as he can! Help him out too by adopting him!

If you would like to adopt Bosco, please make a paid-in-full pledge of $180 or more to WFMU's 2010 Marathon by 11:59pm on March 7th, 2010, and then send an email via this page to stake your claim. Make sure that you specify in the email that you'd like Bosco

Monotone Records Update

There is a new release and change of address at Monotone Records. This is a web site I help maintain for my friend Kevin. His is the label that put out my super lo-fi 3-inch CD-r, and as you can tell from the web site layout, he is a super lo-fi kind of dude. Check it out by clicking above, and if you want some help figuring a web site of your very own, feel free to shoot me an email!

Jana Hunter (Baltimore) soulfully deep-voiced singer-songwriter on Gnomonsong who collaborates and performs with acts like Beach House, Castanets, Vetiver, Deer Tick and Devendra Banhart, is touring for the first time with a full band and is coming to New Brunswick! She won't be performing in Manhattan on this tour so catch her up here while you can before she comes back playing a less intimate venue.

Human Adult Band (New Jersey/Philadelphia) experimental noise/grunge fronted by Trevor Pennsylvania and backed by a collective of artists and general weirdos.

Mirrors & Wires (New Jersey) psychedelic surf band that kind of make you feel like you'd rather be catching waves.

Exploding August + Solanin (Jersey City) are beautiful ladies performing melodies for your sonic pleasure and if you ask them, will probably also have equally beautiful crafts to buy/swap.

I'll put up more details when I get them, but please come out to hear me play my first show in about two years! And with someone I adore. Feeling very last-minute but luxuriously lucky. Everybody’s Doing it: The Breakup

Posted in music on June 18th, 2009 by emily – 1 Comment

Strangely I have been giving out Breakup advice to several of my friends lately.  Not one, not two, but at least three of my friends that I know of (and maybe more) have been going through the painful process of breaking up after being with someone for several years.

Perhaps this is the antithesis of the other trend of this summer, which is starting to see more and more close friends getting married.  I suppose there are seasons for everything.

updates to my music page

I added two photos (taken just today) of me and my ukulele to my music page. With the help of the Internet, it can be a joy to pick up a well-tuned ukulele and thrum out a few tunes. Its so nice, especially on a lazy pre-Summer Sunday afternoon.

an update from rock camp

Posted in events, girls rock, music, rock camp for girls on May 7th, 2009 by emily – Be the first to comment
In honor of Spring fundraising season for the Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls, I am passing on some upcoming dates to Go Go Distro readers.

Everyone knows that summer at Rock Camp is ridiculously fun. But this
year, Spring is pretty slammin', too. We have two action-packed
weekends of wildly fun events coming up for all ages and interests and
budgets, and, of course, Ladies Rock Camp this summer -- all of which
will raise funds for the financial aid fund of the girls summer camp.
As you can imagine, the demand for aid is up this year, so we're
really pulling out all the stops to help make it all possible.

Save these dates!

Willie-Mae-Ra-Thon Festival / May 28 -31

Rock Camp Spring Carnival for Girls / May 30 & 31

Rock Camp & The New York Liberty / June 7

Ladies Rock Camp / July 24-26 & August 7-9

Thanks again for your support of Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls!

What sparks your happiness and sends it careening down the street to Trafalgar Square?

Right now the most ominous storm clouds have rolled in over Jersey City, sheets of rain, pillows of thunderheads, lightning feathering the sky. I am supposed to go to Duane Reade and pick up something for my roommate but I picked the worst time to decide to leave, and instead I found this video via Ruby Psuedo, and remembered several something elses.

This one caught my attention during my last days at work on Wall Street. I would watch it over and over during work to soothe my nerves, became a tiny bit obsessed with Jose Gonzalez (whom Rory and I had seen already--was it with Four Tet?), and ultimately fell in love with The Knife because of their version of the song. And so it goes.

Remembering pressing up to the glass vending machines at the front of the Kmart in Bricktown, wishing we had extra quarters for treats like bouncy balls and stale gum. One time I pushed the soda machine at the front of the Pathmark and got a free soda, someone must have paid and not taken it. I was happy for days afterward.

Oh! Haha. This is the first time I'm seeing this version... cheers everyone.

Love this web application that lets you build your own radio station. Its got much more control than last.fm and pandora. I like them all for different reasons. Add me if you're on any of these sites!

From the show last night: Benoit Pioulard & Windy + Carl

Windy + Benoit, originally uploaded by prizepony.

Le Poisson Rouge is my new favorite music venue and makes me happy to live where we do once again. There is seating across the entire floor with a full bar menu and a two item minimum per table. We sat in silence, Rory across from us, and Allison grabbing me every few minutes because something amazing was happening on stage: visual projections, lush sounds, adorable persons.

Not to mention that Allison was accosted (in a friendly, happy way) by a small dog on the sidewalk, and the fact that we did that pre-show, hanging out conspicuously spying on the talent as he smoked outside the venue. We were "vintage shopping", okay?

Okay.

Some upcoming shows that look amazing.

I just now thought to google it and see what it was.

Now Allison is playing me tracks off the new Royksopp album. Umm. Summer 2009, kids. Oh, that girl from the Knife kills me.

I am so happy to announce that I won a free download from Design for Mankind, a monthly publication put out by Erin Loechner of the equally cool and inspirational Think Bakery. Its a very inspiring little magazine with interactive PDF elements like clickable links and embedded video. This month, it even includes a free music download. I’ve been meaning to check it out further and write about it here, so I am very glad to be one of the chosen winners of the giveaway.

I especially agree with and love their music suggestions near one of the last pages. In particular, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart (going to see them on friday), and Fever Ray.

PS: celebrate with me. This is the 300th post on gogodistro.com! Cheers.

At long last it’s crashed, its colossal mass

Posted in music on February 22nd, 2009 by emily august – Be the first to comment

REAL D // 60s filter

It’s a luscious mix of words and tricks
That let us bet when you know we should’ve folded
On rocks I dreamt of where we’d stepped
And the whole mess of roads we’re now on.

——-

These are my 3D glasses from seeing Coraline yesterday in Union Square. Because I cannot afford Ray Ban Wayfarers and my new spring sense of fashion is built around the concept of “free”, I punched the polarized lenses out and wore them this way. I’ve been dropping more weight, or at least slowly shrinking out of my jeans, and I am trying not to go spend money on any clothes for this interim. Its kind of hard to stear clear of my credit card, but I love a challenge, as well as actively working toward not caring what anyone else thinks.

Last night, Allison and I got to check out the new music venue in Jersey City, I.M. Automata Chino. Her old friends are booking shows there and it promises to be a very good thing for our night life. Super happy and we had a good time trying to dance to everything and naming all of the bands that influenced the boys on stage from song to song. I liked the country folks in the second band with the girl drummer and the steel lap guitar. Reminded me of my friends and yours, Widower.

Especially recommended to those who are keen on singing old-timey gospel songs a the top of your lungs, and getting excited about your relationship with God as it relates to the fact that music is part of who you were created to be. Just saying.

I’ve even gone so far as to write his name down on napkins and hand it to friends to look up on their own time, at the risk of coming across too boldly.

Here is his myspace page, but even better than that I suggest you download the singalong album for free at philwickham.com, then tell me this isn’t the perfect thing to lift your spirit on a dark, sweaty subway ride or even at the gym. Thank God no one can really hear what I’m working out to, because maybe its a little strange.

The album was recorded live at a church in Portland, Oregon. My favorite song is “Beautiful.” His higher register reminds me a lot of Jeff Buckley and makes me cry in a good way.

I’ve been dying to start a chorus or a choir out of my apartment, and I’ve talked to several people about doing this with a surprisingly positive reaction even from those of whom I would not expect more than a snicker. Not sure if its feasable, but this free album download was just the thing I needed to feel like it is still possible!

On a related note, my sisters and I saw him perform last weekend in South Jersey at this giant church and I wish he played a longer set. *Sigh* Definitely a top 5 for me this year, as corny as that may sound to my friends with impeccable music tastes.

Kevin Huelbig from snowstorm, Dec 2007.

Last time we had a show in our apartment was about a year ago, but tonight we are hosting Tim and Herbie from Brown Recluse Sings for a tiny apartment show, as they are stopping off during their mini-East-Coast tour! Its only two of the guys and they are old friends. Should be a nice, mellow evening, so message me if you want directions and more details!

Here is what you are in for:

Sorry I’m still in hermit mood! Grad school applications are about 45% done, now, and the deadlines are all right now. I’ve also been spending a lot of free time babysitting for Rory’s nephew. I’ll be back soon, I promise.
