Scenes from my favorite book.

Every summer I reread Bonjour Tristesse.

Just like The Outsiders it was written by the author when she was a teenager. Its fantastic! I read it before I knew anything about French Cinema and I fell in love.

Here is a scene from the 1958 film:

Other books I habitually read during summer include:
The Chronicles of Narnia series.
Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card.
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett.
After college I added:
One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
and Ham on Rye by Bukowski.

I was a child of the public library system. I wanted to be a librarian when I was little and I longed to join all of the summer reading clubs that were posted up at school at the end of the year. There is something luxurious about laying outside by the pool with a good book, sleeping on the beach with a book across your eyes, or laying inside when its scandalously hot outside and oh-so-air-conditioned inside the house and you've got a comfortable chair. I liked riding bikes and building forts and all of that, but I was always content to sit with a book for hours on end. I wish we had time for such luxuries now that we're grown.

I will re-read my "classics" this year, but it will just have to be between everything else.

I am breaking up with the Earth. Its Over.

an update from rock camp

Posted in events, girls rock, music, rock camp for girls on May 7th, 2009 by emily – Be the first to comment
In honor of Spring fundraising season for the Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls, I am passing on some upcoming dates to Go Go Distro readers.

Everyone knows that summer at Rock Camp is ridiculously fun. But this
year, Spring is pretty slammin', too. We have two action-packed
weekends of wildly fun events coming up for all ages and interests and
budgets, and, of course, Ladies Rock Camp this summer -- all of which
will raise funds for the financial aid fund of the girls summer camp.
As you can imagine, the demand for aid is up this year, so we're
really pulling out all the stops to help make it all possible.

Save these dates!

Willie-Mae-Ra-Thon Festival / May 28 -31

Rock Camp Spring Carnival for Girls / May 30 & 31

Rock Camp & The New York Liberty / June 7

Ladies Rock Camp / July 24-26 & August 7-9

Thanks again for your support of Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls!

mass marketing or marketing with mass? with feeling. marketing by the masses. with life.

What sparks your happiness and sends it careening down the street to Trafalgar Square?

Right now the most ominous storm clouds have rolled in over Jersey City, sheets of rain, pillows of thunderheads, lightning feathering the sky. I am supposed to go to Duane Reade and pick up something for my roommate but I picked the worst time to decide to leave, and instead I found this video via Ruby Psuedo, and remembered several something elses.

This one caught my attention during my last days at work on Wall Street. I would watch it over and over during work to soothe my nerves, became a tiny bit obsessed with Jose Gonzalez (whom Rory and I had seen already--was it with Four Tet?), and ultimately fell in love with The Knife because of their version of the song. And so it goes.

Remembering pressing up to the glass vending machines at the front of the Kmart in Bricktown, wishing we had extra quarters for treats like bouncy balls and stale gum. One time I pushed the soda machine at the front of the Pathmark and got a free soda, someone must have paid and not taken it. I was happy for days afterward.

Oh! Haha. This is the first time I'm seeing this version... cheers everyone.

Love this web application that lets you build your own radio station. Its got much more control than last.fm and pandora. I like them all for different reasons. Add me if you're on any of these sites!
