branch fabric

Horses and Branches purchased from Purl Patchwork in Soho.

The horses are for a pair of pajama pants I’m making in class, and I think the branches will become a kimono-style robe, or a skirt with pockets.

I had a nice weekend and got three steps closer to moving everything in to my new apartment in Jersey City. Rory set up my computer for me, but its behaving very oddly and when I tried to upload pictures and a few projects that I’ve been working on, the poor thing almost exploded. Soon soon soon I will be back in action. Meanwhile, I’ve been keeping busy.

In sewing class on Sunday we sewed all kinds of seams I had never been aware of. It seemed like a lot of work, but the time flew by. I learned a really cool way to do a blind hem, and got to try my hand at the very professional overlock machine, which was the easiest thing I have ever done in my life. Granted, I didn’t have to thread the monster, so the ease of use was a bit of a given.

When I came home from class, Rory was watching the original Solyaris, a psychological exploration of some crazy space men with a great sense of 70’s fashion and furnishings. It was very strange and slow, but it got better, until I passed out and started dreaming in epic science fiction form. I was so tired that I had a crazy, deep dream until the DVD menu woke me up.

After I woke up, I laid on the couch for a bit until I noticed a strange sound coming from one of the baseboards. It sounded very clearly like a small creature eating something crunchy. I was still a little sleepy so it took me awhile to determine, but I decided that it is definitely a mouse! I found a small hole in the wall, entering from the kitchen where we keep our cleaning supplies next to the fridge. I cleared out the area and, sure enough, Ruby started going crazy over by the hole: sticking her paws into the wall, meowing, staring, and looking at me like, “get me that mouse!” Needless to say, I am not looking forward to either finding a dead mouse or having to “do something” about him.

I’m glad I own a cat.

Things to do this week month:

  • Purchase and preshrink some fabric for a class project (3 yards, medium-weight cotton)
  • Start changing my address on all of my accounts. I’ve been putting that off.
  • Start planning stuff to do on vacation in Portland in August. Need to get in touch with friends and determine whose couches we’ll be sleeping on, and which nights that will be happening. Also got a suggestion to take a drive up to Seattle while we’re there.
  • Upload pics of the apartment and Rory’s City Sol Festival.
  • Unpack and go through all the stuff I moved this weekend.
  • Band practice with Kevin at some point, and going to the diner with Brendan before I go away.
  • Re-apply for a parking permit.
  • Print out pictures for my grandmother in Virginia and get them in the mail.
  • Plan a party in August!

Having a small show tomorrow for Allison’s birthday party. Snowstorm is playing, and I will probably play a few songs, as well. We plan on catching both sets of fireworks from Manhattan and New Jersey all at once!

We’re mostly moved in to the new place, and my new workroom is coming together bit by bit. I’ll take photos of it soon enough and bombard you with my Jersey City awesomeness.

I’ve been away on business to the West Coast all last week, and I’m still catching up on sleep and sound. Forgive me for the creative lull. I believe things will be much better in the weeks to come!
