Everybody’s Doing it: The Breakup

Strangely I have been giving out Breakup advice to several of my friends lately.  Not one, not two, but at least three of my friends that I know of (and maybe more) have been going through the painful process of breaking up after being with someone for several years.

Perhaps this is the antithesis of the other trend of this summer, which is starting to see more and more close friends getting married.  I suppose there are seasons for everything.

updates to my music page

I added two photos (taken just today) of me and my ukulele to my music page. With the help of the Internet, it can be a joy to pick up a well-tuned ukulele and thrum out a few tunes. Its so nice, especially on a lazy pre-Summer Sunday afternoon.

Scenes from my favorite book.

Every summer I reread Bonjour Tristesse.

Just like The Outsiders it was written by the author when she was a teenager. Its fantastic! I read it before I knew anything about French Cinema and I fell in love.

Here is a scene from the 1958 film:

Other books I habitually read during summer include:
The Chronicles of Narnia series.
Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card.
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett.
After college I added:
One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
and Ham on Rye by Bukowski.

I was a child of the public library system. I wanted to be a librarian when I was little and I longed to join all of the summer reading clubs that were posted up at school at the end of the year. There is something luxurious about laying outside by the pool with a good book, sleeping on the beach with a book across your eyes, or laying inside when its scandalously hot outside and oh-so-air-conditioned inside the house and you’ve got a comfortable chair. I liked riding bikes and building forts and all of that, but I was always content to sit with a book for hours on end. I wish we had time for such luxuries now that we’re grown.

I will re-read my “classics” this year, but it will just have to be between everything else.

an update from rock camp

In honor of Spring fundraising season for the Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls, I am passing on some upcoming dates to Go Go Distro readers.

Everyone knows that summer at Rock Camp is ridiculously fun. But this
year, Spring is pretty slammin’, too. We have two action-packed
weekends of wildly fun events coming up for all ages and interests and
budgets, and, of course, Ladies Rock Camp this summer — all of which
will raise funds for the financial aid fund of the girls summer camp.
As you can imagine, the demand for aid is up this year, so we’re
really pulling out all the stops to help make it all possible.

Save these dates!

Willie-Mae-Ra-Thon Festival / May 28 -31

Rock Camp Spring Carnival for Girls / May 30 & 31

Rock Camp & The New York Liberty / June 7

Ladies Rock Camp / July 24-26 & August 7-9

Thanks again for your support of Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls!

mass marketing or marketing with feeling.

marketing by the masses. with life.

What sparks your happiness and sends it careening down the street to Trafalgar Square?

Right now the most ominous storm clouds have rolled in over Jersey City, sheets of rain, pillows of thunderheads, lightning feathering the sky. I am supposed to go to Duane Reade and pick up something for my roommate but I picked the worst time to decide to leave, and instead I found this video via Ruby Psuedo, and remembered several something elses.

My station on Blip.fm.

Love this web application that lets you build your own radio station. Its got much more control than last.fm and pandora. I like them all for different reasons. Add me if you’re on any of these sites!

Show: Benoit Pioulard & Windy + Carl

Windy + Benoit, originally uploaded by prizepony.

Le Poisson Rouge is my new favorite music venue and makes me happy to live where we do once again. There is seating across the entire floor with a full bar menu and a two item minimum per table. We sat in silence, Rory across from us, and Allison grabbing me every few minutes because something amazing was happening on stage: visual projections, lush sounds, adorable persons.

Not to mention that Allison was accosted (in a friendly, happy way) by a small dog on the sidewalk, and the fact that we did that pre-show, hanging out conspicuously spying on the talent as he smoked outside the venue. We were “vintage shopping”, okay?

Okay.

bad diary days

I have been brain dead for almost a week, now. Something happened last week, after a few days of lost sleep and intense work productivity, my brain SNAPPED SHUT and hasn’t reopened for business since.

photobooth tuesday black and white

We had a whirlwind weekend of a wedding and a craft fair… and in the midst of that I pulled a muscle in my neck (loading craft fair stuff to the car, I think), lost my wallet with everything important inside, and generally fell to pieces. I would say I need a holiday but I have spent enough time sleeping this off to say that maybe even a holiday wouldn’t work. I guess its the natural ebb and flow of things to sometimes be up and sometimes be down. I’m feeling like this low is nothing short of comical with the amount of trouble I’m having just doing normal things. Words are jumping out at me and rearranging themselves into other words. I’m mishearing the English language, forgetting to eat lunch, and totally blanking on people’s names. I wonder if this what its like to be senile, or maybe I should be on an episode of House.

Tonight we are going to see Benoît Pioulard at Le Poisson Rouge. He has been a favorite in our apartment for a long time. Rory has some polaroids from him. I can’t wait for the show.

busy bee, cats

With the change of seasons, I’ve found respite in life away from the Internet. I’m trying to force myself back to Earth, but relishing in a change of pace in the meantime. I have a lot of work to do for the upcoming Craft Mafia event this weekend, and Rory and I have also been trying to get out and explore the Great Outdoors. Just this weekend, Rory and I went for a jog in 80-degree sunshine in Liberty State Park, grabbed delicious Indian food in Journal Square, and spent more time than we meant to with friends. I missed a few of my obligations because we timed things poorly, but it was still really nice to spend the weekend together.

I am feeling great lately. This is such a nice change from the consistently cold, miserable weather we’ve had otherwise!

Getting ready for Art Attack!

feather button hair combs

So, I painstakingly spent my Saturday afternoon getting high on epoxy fumes and losing track of time as I carefully placed guinea hen feathers and buttons on bridal hair combs. Though I also made a few headbands, my focus was held by the subtle differences between downy under-feathers and larger plumes, the way the light catches a small red button held against a giant black one. It was glorious.

Thankfully, I also had an amazing night out both Friday and Saturday to counter-balance all of this hardcore craft-nerd time.

I plan to bring these with me to the April 26th Art Attack in Jersey City, so if you are interested you are just going to have to pay me a visit! Check out the craft mafia web site for more info on the craft fair.

jersey city drawing club – session 2 notes

drawing club week 2

In attendance: Allison, Emily, Caitlin, Frank, Kate, James, Lizzy
On the menu this week: chips and salsa, ginger cookies, Stella Artois, japanese rice snacks, roasted pistachios, almonds from Subia’s, yellow peeps and PBR.
This week’s winner: no winners or losers here, though I was chided for my lack of planning regarding the concept of still life. Rightfully so.
JP offered to have the next session at his place, in Liberty Harbour. Stay tuned.

Anyone who was at drawing club last night at our place will appreciate this Serious Drawings book coming out by Marc Johns. Found via Drawn! blog.

Also of note:
NYC lego blocks, and Maira Kalman via Frank.
The Happy Lion via Kate.
Lone Wolf and Cub, beloved by James.
